Saltash is built on the Cornish bank of the Tamar, and it is steep — the old town drops sharply from Fore Street down to the waterside beneath Brunel’s bridge. Long, sharply graded drainage runs are the norm here, and where the gradient eases at the bottom, anything solid tends to settle.

How quickly can you get to Saltash?
Saltash sits a few minutes over the bridge from our Plymouth patch, and we are through there most working days. For a blocked drain we aim to be with you the same day, and we run a genuine 24-hour emergency line — someone who knows the area answers it, not a national call centre.
Do you charge extra for crossing the Tamar?
No. The Tamar crossing is simply part of working in south east Cornwall and it is built into our normal rates. You will not find it added on at the bottom of the invoice.
My drain backs up whenever it rains hard — why?
Very often, yes. Much of Saltash is built on the slope down to the Tamar, so runs are short and sharply graded. That is fine until something restricts the pipe — root growth, a partial collapse, a build-up of fat — and then the water arriving from higher up has nowhere to go and surcharges at the lowest gully. A CCTV survey shows exactly where the restriction sits rather than guessing.
Who is responsible for a drain shared with my neighbours?
Yes. Where a run serves more than one property it is usually a public lateral drain and South West Water is responsible for it. We will tell you honestly if that is what we find, and we can survey it and give you the evidence to pass on — we would rather do that than charge you for work that is not yours to pay for.
Can you find a drain that is not on any plan?
Yes. A lot of the older housing around Fore Street and St Stephens has been altered, extended and re-plumbed over the years, and the drainage on the plan bears little resemblance to what is in the ground. We trace and locate with camera and sonde, and we can mark the route out on the surface so you know what runs where before anyone digs.
Do you deal with septic tanks in the villages around Saltash?
Yes. Once you are out past Hatt, Botus Fleming, Landrake and Tideford, mains drainage thins out and most properties are on a septic tank or treatment plant. We empty them, we survey and repair the pipework and soakaways, and we can advise on what the 2020 General Binding Rules mean for your discharge.
